At the age of 70 on August 16th 2008 Murdoch, his daughter Ruth, her husband and a friend climbed Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain at 4,409 ft (1344 m). Starting from only 60 ft (18 m) in Glen Nevis, it is 10.5 miles (17 km) there and back to the summit, which is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano. Murdoch was sponsored for the walk and raised over £500 for the Amazon Hope Project which provides a health service for people living on the banks of the Amazon and its tributaries.
