bishop lesslie newbigin in south india 1958

the dvd

Introduction

In 1958 or thereabouts, Bishop Lesslie Newbigin, then bishop in the Madurai Diocese of the Church of South India, was interviewed for ‘Life’ magazine. He was given a set of slides which they had made and he recorded a commentary to go with the slides. Though more than 50 years old, the slides and the commentary have been made into a DVD through the good offices of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council. The poor sound quality of part of the DVD (particularly at the start) is due to the age of the original tape recording.

The work in Madurai Diocese is described on pages 146-148 of Bishop Newbigin’s  autobiography ‘Unfinished Agenda’. Included are some verses of the Tamil lyric ‘Yellam Yesuve’, composed by Y Gnanamani and translated by D T Niles:

Christ is all to me
Jesus Christ is all to me.
In this world of strife and sorrow,
Christ is all to me.

Brother He, me brother calls;
Bridegroom He, the Church His bride.
Parent, Kinsman, Master, Saviour,
And to each his Friend and Guide.

Watching me with shepherd care
Lovingly my wants attends,
My Companion all the way ‘til
Evening falls and journey ends.

Peace when storms around me blow,
Joy in sorrow, calm in strife,
Health in sickness, wealth in want,
The Noon day sun, the Light of Life.

Teacher of the truth of God,
Prophet of God’s heavenly reign,
Sent of God that man may find in
Serving Him eternal gain.

He the prize and He the goal
And by Him the race begun.
He the runner of the team who
Will complete the race I run.
